Red Cone, Colorado

August 31, 2008

We ran Red Cone with a group of other Xterras (both 1st and 2nd gens).  Most trail guides (books and web sites) rate this as one of the most dangerous trails in Colorado.  It isn't necessarily that difficult, but the descents from the peak are steep, loose, and have serious drop-offs on both sides.  A mistake could cause you to get sideways and begin to roll, potentially over a thousand feet to the bottom.  For this reason, it isn't to be taken lightly.  It is also one-way (downhill) only.  The reality is that many roads in Colorado are narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs that can be unforgiving to mistakes and potentially fatal.   Red Cone is just a bit less forgiving.  The scenery is  incredible (as it is throughout the state) though.
